Agricultural operations require large quantities of heated water for cleaning and sterilization.  On a typical dairy farm, heating water and cooling milk can account for up to 40% of energy use.  Conventional systems that use fossil fuels such as kerosene, diesel and propane, are inconvenient and costly.  Fuel must be transported across large distances while fumes and noise disturb livestock and threaten land contamination.
